zen Courtyard

This is a personal take on a Zen gravel garden (karesansui) on the south side of the house. I brought many less reliably hardy plants from my previous location (where I had a south facing conservatory), and many of these are planted around the outside. The ebullient outer planting contrasts with the inner gravel garden, with an arrangement of greenish rockery stones sitting on a limestone gravel, surrounded by a granite kerb pathway and Portland stone benches.

Plants include: Acer palmatum, Borinda papyrifera, Alangium platanifolium, Cotinus, Corokea cotoneaster, Edgworthia chyrsantha 'Red Dragon' Fagus sylvatica' Brathay Purple', Prunus mume 'Beni Chidori', Collutia hysterix, Hamamellis 'Spanish Spider', Liquidambar 'Slender Silhouette', Daphne bholua 'Lympsfield', Nerium oleander, Ceanothus arboreus 'Trewithen Blue', Cryptomeria japonica 'Cristata', Colquhounia cocchinea, Wisteria brachybotrys 'Okayama', Cestrum parqui, Clerodendrum trichotomum 'Carnival', Olearia 'Moondance', Fremontodendron 'Californian Glory', Acca sellowiana, Arundo formosana' Golden Showers', Miscanthus nepalensis, Pennisetum 'Karley Rose and 'Redhead', Iris japonica, lazica and pumila 'Nicola', Lobelia tupa, Berkheya purpurea, Paeonia delavayi, Acanthus senii, Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana, Farfugium, Asarum, Tricyrtis, Eucomis, Epimedium, Dodecatheon, Galanthus, Amorphophallus bulbifer
